Every setting of Quikap and QuikapStudio, what it does and where it lives. Changes apply at once and are kept; nothing needs a restart.
Both programs have a Preferences window. Every change applies at once and is kept: there is no Apply or Save
button, and closing the window loses nothing. A setting a local-first program cannot honestly offer is answered by a
sentence, not by a switch that does nothing (see What is not a setting).
QuikapStudio
Open it with Edit › Preferences… or Ctrl ,. Ctrl Tab moves between
pages; Esc or Done closes it.
General
| Setting |
Default |
What it does |
| Visual experience |
Floating Canvas |
Floating Canvas: the canvas fills the window and the tools, the inspector and the recent captures float over it as light surfaces. Studio: the toolbar across the top, the inspector at the right, the recent captures along the bottom (the look of 0.3). Switching keeps your capture, its edits, the tool, the selection and the zoom. Also in View › Visual experience. |
| Theme |
Dark |
Dark, Light, or Follow Windows (changes with Windows' own setting). Also in View › Theme. |
| Density |
Comfortable |
Comfortable leaves room around the controls; Compact brings them closer together, for a small screen. |
| Opening captures |
One window |
One window: a new capture, a file or a Gallery item opens in the window you used last; what it replaces keeps its edits. A window for each capture: every capture gets its own window. Either way, File › Open in a new window (Ctrl Shift O) and the Gallery's Open in a new window make another. |
| Check for updates automatically |
On |
Two minutes after start, then once a day. Off: only Help › Check for updates. |
Editor
| Setting |
Default |
What it does |
| Canvas background |
Dark |
What surrounds the image: Dark, Gray, Light, or a Checkerboard that shows where an export will be transparent. |
| Expand the canvas to fit annotations |
On |
An arrow or a callout drawn past the image's edge is exported whole; the new area is transparent. A crop always wins. |
| Pasted images |
Keep as a layer |
A layer can be moved and resized after pasting. Merge into the image: it becomes part of the image (Undo still takes it back). |
| Show the tools' names |
On |
Off: a compact strip of icons; each still names itself when you point at it. |
| Esc closes the window |
Off |
When Esc has nothing else to do (no drawing, selection or crop to cancel), it closes the window. Your edits are kept either way. |
| Copy a capture to the clipboard as it opens |
On |
A capture from Quikap, a file or a Gallery item: the image, with its annotations, is on the clipboard at once, ready to paste anywhere. Quikap's own copy of a fresh capture (its Preferences › Capture) is replaced by this one, which more programs can read. |
| Copy again after every change |
Off |
Each annotation, crop or effect replaces the clipboard's copy a moment later, so what you paste is always what you see. Off: Copy All (Ctrl Shift C) when you are ready. |
Gallery
| Setting |
Default |
What it does |
| Thumbnail size |
Medium |
In the Gallery and in the recent captures under the canvas. |
| Recent captures under the canvas |
25 |
How many of your newest captures the tray shows (5 to 200). |
| Ask before moving captures to the Recycle Bin |
On |
Off: Delete moves them at once. Undo works for a few seconds either way, and the Recycle Bin after that. |
| Captures folder |
Quikap's |
Shown here; Open opens it, Change in Quikap… opens Quikap's Preferences at Capture. Quikap, which writes the captures, decides where they go. |
Video
| Setting |
Default |
What it does |
| Click rings |
On |
A ring grows from every click of a recording made with its clicks. |
| Cursor highlight |
Off |
A soft disc follows the pointer. |
| Spotlight |
Off |
Everything but the area around the pointer is dimmed. |
Export
| Setting |
Default |
What it does |
| Format |
PNG |
PNG keeps every pixel and transparency; JPEG makes smaller files of photos. The Export dialog offers both; this is its first choice and the type of a file dragged out of the Gallery. |
| JPEG quality |
90 |
50 to 100. A JPEG has no transparency: a shadow's margin and an expanded canvas are white in it. |
| File name |
Gallery name |
The capture's Gallery name (its date and time until you rename it), or always the time it was taken. |
Advanced
| Setting |
Default |
What it does |
| Keep QuikapStudio running after its last window closes |
Off |
The next capture opens at once. File › Exit ends it. |
| Open PNG, JPEG and BMP files with QuikapStudio |
Off |
Adds QuikapStudio to Windows' Open with list for those files, for your account only. The program Windows opens them with by default stays your choice. Uninstalling QuikapStudio removes the entry. |
| Logs |
— |
Open the logs folder: what QuikapStudio did, without your captures' contents. |
| Start over |
— |
Reset all preferences… puts every preference back to its default. Your captures, their edits, their Gallery names and the tools' styles stay as they are. |
| Reset the workspace layout |
— |
Shows the inspector and the recent captures again, puts the toolbar's tools back to the defaults, and opens every floating surface. The experience, the theme and the density stay. |
QuikapStudio keeps its preferences in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Quikap\studio-settings.json, and the Gallery's names and
favourites in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Quikap\gallery.json.
Quikap
Open it from the tray menu (Preferences…, or About Quikap for its last page), by right-clicking the capture widget, or
with quikap.exe --preferences (add general, capture, video, hotkeys or about to open that page). QuikapStudio's
Change in Quikap… opens it at Capture. Quikap keeps its settings in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Quikap\settings.

On |
Off: Windows' software encoder (slower; for a graphics driver that misbehaves). |
Hotkeys
Each row records a shortcut: click it and press the keys (Backspace turns it off, Esc keeps the one it
had). A shortcut needs
Ctrl, Alt or Win unless it is a function key; the same shortcut twice is refused; and
each row says whether it is registered, taken by another program, or off. Restore defaults puts them
back.
| Action |
Default |

Ctrl Shift Q |

What is not a setting
| You may look for |
Why it is not here |
| Usage data, tips and news |
Neither program sends anything about how you use it. There is nothing to turn off. |
| Cloud storage, sharing to online services, mobile sharing |
Your captures go nowhere you did not take them. Export, Copy and dragging out of the Gallery cover sharing. |
| Language |
English only today; a menu with one language would be decoration. |
| Spell checking |
QuikapStudio's text boxes have none to switch yet. |
| Webcam, screen drawing, HDR, printing |
Not built yet (Status); a switch for them would not be honest. |
| A theme for Quikap's capture chrome |
The toolbar, the bars and the widget sit on top of anything on your screen: a dark heads-up style is legible on every background, so it does not change. |
