Getting started
What you need, how a release is installed and activated, and where to go next. Written ahead of the first release, so that it is ready when the release is.
No release exists yet. Status says what does. The steps below are how an installation will be set up once a release is published; the downloads page says so until then.
What you need
- A computer with Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit. Quikap and QuikapStudio do not run on macOS or Linux yet.
- A license key (it looks like
QK-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX), or an Exprezoe account if you work at Exprezoe. One license covers both programs.
No administrator rights are needed: both programs install for your Windows account only.
1. Download
- Open Downloads and sign in with your license key.
- Choose the installer of the program you want: Quikap to capture, QuikapStudio to edit. Most people want both.
- Before you run a file, verify it. The installers are not yet signed with a publisher certificate, so the checksum is how you know the file is the one we released.
2. Install
Run the installer. Windows SmartScreen will say the publisher is unknown: choose More info, then Run anyway. That warning is expected until the installer carries a publisher certificate. It is the reason step 1.3 matters.
3. Activate
In either program, choose Help › License, enter your license key, and choose Activate. The installation takes one seat of your license; the other program on the same computer takes a seat of its own. You can see your installations, and give a seat back, on your account page. More about seats is in Licenses and seats.
Both programs work without being activated. What activation gives an installation is updates.
4. Capture
Press the capture hotkey. The screen freezes, the overlay appears, and you choose a display, a window or a region. The capture is written to your disk as an artifact and, if QuikapStudio is installed, opened there.
